about

Extemporize is an experimental Jazz project created by drummer Mark Heaney.

The band reformed in May 2017.

The band features:
Mark Heaney - Drums
Pete Billington - Keys
Jerry Soffe - Bass
Stuart Henderson - Trumpet, Flugel Horn

This album is a raw, gritty, organic in the moment recording that reflects the times we live in and the bands name and approach to their music.

"Deep grooves and masterful musicianship.
A bold and often dazzling listening.
Enormously impressive”
(Rhythm magazine)

“This is pretty cool –
great compositions, very good performances all around and
creating a cool atmosphere.Extemporize seem to be a mix of
Ian Carr’s Nucleus and Nils Petter Molvaer”
(Wulf Müller A&R Okeh Records)

"There’s plenty of vitality and personality in the approach,
The thing moves, and there’s an immediacy in the writing and
performance ethic that makes the whole thing rattle and rip".
(Marlbank)

“Mark Heaney is a machine”
(Time Out)

"If you had any doubts about the relevance of Jazz music in 2017,
this project from London. England will set you straight. Extemporize's
Capital, released in May, is an absolute cracker. These 13 polished
impossibly groovy tracks are proof that Nu Jazz is an art form to be
reckoned with. Heaney's drumming is world class. Lively intricate,
it is full of tasty suprises. even on a slower track like "TOWERS"
he finds a way to take a straightforward hip hop beat and turn it into
something more. (Also featuring a killer horn performance by
Henderson, its a hip hop sample waiting to happen.)"
